HORMEAD ROAD W9

Hormead Road

The upper floor-and-a-half of this Victorian terrace house had been bought from the Council under "right to buy" several years before our client bought the flat. It took nearly five months to obtain consent to build an additional floor on the rear extension, a new room in the roof, and a new terrace overlooking the canal.

We soundproofed the floor and the separating wall between the two flats, and made a cantilevered steel staircase which provided access to the new floor while permitting daylight to filter into the living room. Kate Beard Lighting designed the lighting installation. All the joinery was made by the main contractor.

Galvanised metal stair treads found on oil rigs were used to form a simple and transparent balcony, and radiator grille.
