PRACTICE PROFILE

Gus Alexander Architects has been trading as an independent architectural consultancy since 1986.

We are a small firm of architects based in a studio in Farringdon which we share with another small practice and for whom we provide reciprocal cover during holidays. Since 1995 Gus Alexander has written a regular column in Building, the construction magazine of record.

Most of our work involves alterations to houses and flats for private clients. These are typically in the range £40,000.00-£400,000.00 and are usually located in Central London. We also work for a private Hotel group, and for clients with properties that require licences. Since 1990,we have been the architects for a "special needs" Housing Association providing accommodation for single homeless people who often require specialist care.

Although we have built a few new buildings, most of our work involves the refurbishment, remodelling and extending of existing structures. Sixty or seventy of these have been Listed Buildings.

We offer practical and stylish solutions to architectural problems, and undertake to guide a project through from inception to completion. This often includes the design of furniture and interior fittings. We offer a fully bespoke service and tailor our architectural work to suit the particular needs and expectations of our clients. This may reflect a preference for a traditional or a contemporary design approach, and may need to allow for phasing over a number of years to suit financial constraints or restrictions imposed by freeholders or other interested parties.

Wherever possible we prefer to negotiate contracts for construction work with building firms whom we know to be reliable, and with whom we and our clients have worked successfully for several years in the past. We find this this helps to make the whole process of commissioning and implementing construction work much more agreeable and far less stress-inducing than it otherwise might be.
